I co-established the Abolitionist Anthropology Working Group in September 2022 with my colleague Rebekah Ciribassi to develop a mutually supportive presence of anthropologists who are doing diverse anti-carceral work.
As scholars and practitioners, we are situated in universities and research institutions in North America, that are located in prison-towns or in close proximity to prisons or detention facilities.
Over decades these institutions have contributed towards the gentrification of neighborhoods and perpetuated the displacement of vulnerable and over-policed communities, who do not enjoy the privileges of university access that many of us benefit from.
For early and late-career graduate students, researchers, tenured and untenured faculty, with differential access to institutional power - this group is a platform to brainstorm how we can direct university resources towards de-carceration and prison abolition.
